This stupa, which was constructed by King Devanampiya Tissa(247-207BC),is also located at ancient Mahmevnawa Gardens. This Buddhist temple is the earliest built temple in Sri Lanka. The most important thing abut this sthupa is that lord Buddha’s right collarbone is enshrined in this. This included a residential complex for monks. The sthupa had a diameter about 50 meters.
The sthupa was distroyed in time to time, and later restored by King Aggabodhi. After that also it was renovated. At the time of building this sthupa it had a covering roof known as the Watadage which supported by stone pillers. Though the watadage is destroyed, what remains are pillers.
