There are 26 National Parks in Sri Lanka.
Yala National Park
The most visited and the second largest national park in Sri Lanka is Yala National Park. This is located in about 300 kilometers from Colombo, in Southern Province and Uva Province. This was established in 1900 as a wildlife sanctuary and was designated as a national park in 1938. It also one of the bird areas in the Island. There are about 215 bird species in the park. Animals like Elephants, sloth bear, water buffalo, toque macaque are some of animals visitors can see. Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. In this park there are about 45 species of mammals.
Wilpattu National Park
Wilpattu National Park is the largest national park in the Island and is located at north west of Sri lanka. More than 100 tanks are found throughout Wilpattu. About 30 species of mammals are found In this park including elephants, leopards, sloth bears, water buffalos and deers and this is a best destination for wildlife lovers. Nearly 150 varieties of birds are found in this park.
Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park is located between Thimbolketiya and Thanamalwila. About 11 kilometers from the park there are places for accomodation for tourists. Before the construction of the park people used the land for chena farming. After the designation of the park the people were removed. There are 43 mammal species in the park including elephants,Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear, Sri Lankan sambar deer,wild boar, water buffalo. This park is a good site for birdwatching visitors. 184 bird species are found in this park.
Lunugamvehera National Park
This National Park is located in Monaragala District in Uva Province.The forest of Lunugamvehera consists of two areas. They are scrubdland and grassland areas. There are 43 spicies of mammals including Sri Lankan elephant, Wild boar, Sri Lankan Axis deer, Sambar deer, There are 33 spices of reptiles including Mugger crocodile. 183 spices of birds are found in the park including Painted stork and Grey heron. Kumana Natioinal Park
This park is prominent for migratory birds and is located at southeastern cost of SriLanka.From April to July large number of bords migrate to Kumana national Park. One species is Indian Pond Heron. Another variaty is Waterfowl. The tanks in the park support the bird life of the park. Kumana is a good destination for foreign and local bird lovers.In the forest around the park ” Palu trees are found”.
